This course will provide a basic understanding of natural gas measurement fundamentals and practical instruction to produce a more knowledgeable and proficient measurement staff. It will also emphasize the importance of accurate measurement and system balance to the bottom line.

Instructors have extensive field and back-office experience with production, midstream and transmission companies. In addition, they are very experienced in the maintenance and calibration of measurement equipment, auditing gas analysis labs, troubleshooting LAUF (Lost & Unaccounted For) issues and best measurement practices.

This training can consist of a one, or two-day course. The one-day course will consist of the following topics.

  • Measurement History
  • Gas laws & physical behavior
  • Natural gas chemistry
  • Primary, Secondary & Tertiary measurement devices
  • Meter Classifications/Definitions of (Differential, Linear, Thermal) meters

  • Gas volume & energy determination
  • Brief review of sampling methods & their importance
  • Review of Industry Standards (API, GPA, AGA)
  • Fundamentals of gas chromatography
  • Importance of maintained & certified test equipment

  • Importance of witnessing third party meter test inspections

  • Orifice meter AGA 3 / API 14.3 approval specification requirements
  • Abnormal measurement conditions effects & remedies

  • API 21.1 (EFM Commissioning & verification requirements)

  • Pulsation causes & effects/remediation
