Hart Communicators

When it comes to configuring, calibrating, and diagnosing field devices in process industries, Hart Communicators are an indispensable tool for both technicians and engineers. That’s why JM Test Systems offers a wide selection at competitive prices.

What Is a HART Communicator?

A HART communicator is a handheld device used to configure, troubleshoot, diagnose, and maintain HART-enabled field instruments such as pressure transmitters, temperature transmitters, flowmeters, and control valves. It communicates with smart instruments using the HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transducer) protocol, allowing technicians to view process variables, change device settings, run diagnostics, and verify instrument performance in the field.

HART communication combines digital device information with the traditional 4–20 mA analog signal used in industrial process control. Depending on the application, technicians may use a dedicated HART field communicator or a process calibrator with integrated HART communication capabilities.

JM Test Systems offers HART communicators and HART-enabled calibration equipment from manufacturers including Emerson, Honeywell, Meriam, and Additel, with options available to purchase or rent.

HART Communicators for Field Instrument Configuration and Troubleshooting

HART communicators give instrumentation technicians direct access to HART-enabled field devices for setup, configuration, diagnostics, and maintenance. They are commonly used with smart pressure, temperature, level, and flow transmitters as well as other HART-compatible process instrumentation.

JM Test Systems carries handheld HART communicators and HART-enabled process calibration equipment for industrial maintenance, commissioning, troubleshooting, and instrumentation applications.

What Does a HART Communicator Do?

A HART communicator exchanges digital information with a HART-enabled instrument. Technicians can use it to read device information and process variables, configure parameters, check device status, review diagnostics, and troubleshoot smart field instruments without relying only on the instrument’s 4–20 mA output.

HART Communicator vs. HART Calibrator

Equipment Primary Purpose Typical Tasks
HART Communicator Communicate with HART devices Configure parameters, read variables, diagnose faults, change settings
HART Calibrator Verify instrument measurement accuracy Source/measure signals, test transmitters, perform calibration
HART Process Calibrator Communication + calibration Configure HART devices and perform calibration with one instrument

A HART communicator communicates with and configures a HART-enabled device, while a HART calibrator provides the measurement or reference capabilities needed to verify instrument accuracy. Some multifunction process calibrators combine HART communication and calibration functions in one instrument, allowing technicians to perform both tasks with a single field tool.

Choosing the Right HART Communicator

The right communicator depends on the field instruments you service, required HART functionality, hazardous-area requirements, device compatibility, and whether you also need process calibration capabilities. Dedicated handheld communicators are well suited to device configuration and diagnostics, while multifunction calibrators with HART support can be useful when calibration and communication need to be performed together.

JM Test Systems offers equipment from Emerson, Honeywell, Meriam, Additel, and other instrumentation manufacturers to support different field applications.

Buy or Rent HART Communicators

Purchase HART communicators for ongoing instrumentation work or choose a HART communicator rental for shutdowns, commissioning, troubleshooting, turnaround projects, and other temporary requirements. JM Test Systems can help you compare available models and select equipment based on your HART devices and testing requirements.
