Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) with JM Test Systems

Non-destructive testing (NDT) available on critical pins, welds, fasteners, and any other component termed “critical structural components” by the manufacturer. NDT is a useful method of inspecting for sub-surface degradation without damaging the components on the truck. Non-destructive testing can be performed on Aerial Lift Devices, Digger Derricks, other tracked and wheeled units that may have critical components as identified by the manufacturer.

Visual Examination (VT)

Provides a more in-depth examination of critical pins, welds, and fasteners for signs of extensive wear, corrosion, cracking, and other defects.
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)

Ultrasonic Thickness Testing (UT)

Inspection method used to determine cracking and other degradation of critical pins in the boom structure. Ultrasonic waves are used to determine the overall thickness of the pin.

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)An ultrasonic wave is sent out from the test instrument, and the distance measured is displayed on the instruments screen.

A shorter signal returned, when compared to the overall thickness of the pin, allows a Technician to determine if there is a potential issue within the pin.

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)

Magnetic particles, such as iron oxide, are applied to a weld that is found to be suspicious from the visual examination. Once a magnetic field is applied to the metal joined by the weld, these particles accumulate in any crack or other discontinuity that may be present. This presence of accumulated particles allows a Technician to determine if there is a potential issue with the weld.

Dye Penetrant Testing (PT)

Another method of non-destructive examination to further confirm cracks or other discontinuities that may be present in a weld. Performed only as a confirmation of MT findings, due to paint having to be removed from the surface.

Rotation Bearing Deflection

Used to determine the amount of wear on the bearings in the turntable over time. This is a useful tool to track degradation of the bearings over time. Worn bearings could lead to: loose movement, excessive backlash and excessive wear. Left unresolved, excessive wear can lead to permanent deformation and possibly early failure of the bearings.
